Little by little

Today, Arla had a barium swallow test to verify what types and textures of foods she can safely eat or drink on a regular basis.  The test involves the patient eating and drinking a variety of foods that have been coated or mixed with barium.    During the test, Arla swallowed these various foods and drinks while an x-ray was taken of her mouth and throat showing each swallow.  The barium makes the food or drink clearly visible on the x-ray.  During each type of food or drink swallowed, a speech pathologist watches how the food is moving from the mouth, down the throat, and into the esophagus.

Although Arla’s swallow is slightly delayed, she was able to correctly swallow all textures except thin liquids.  The thin liquids, while they do go into the esophagus, try to take a trip down the wind pipe.  Arla is able to cough when this slight aspiration happens.  Since Arla is not totally successful with thin liquids, these liquids can be thickened.

Because of the success of this swallow test, the speech pathologist will begin ordering food for Arla to eat.  This, just like everything else, will be a process.  The hope is that eventually, Arla will be able to eat enough to get all her calories.  Until her oral intake of food can sustain her nutritional needs, she will continue to receive nutrition via her feeding tube.

Physical therapy is progressing well.  Occupational therapy is going well, too.  Speech therapy is still a lot of trying techniques to see how much Arla is really understanding and communicating.  Arla becomes tired from physical exertion, which is expected as she builds her strength, and we are beginning to understand that she becomes tired equally from mental activity.  Because Arla’s ability to receive information is impaired, simple things like several people talking at once can overload her mind and make her tired.

If you choose to visit, please make the visits short.  If Harold is with Arla and you wish to talk to him, we encourage you to do so in the large lounge or cafeteria at the facility or take a walk outside.  Lengthy visits and lots of conversation seem to overload Arla’s brain receivers and make her tired.  The brain needs time to be quiet and rest just like the body.

We also want to thank all of you who have sent cards and posted comments on the blog.  We are just now beginning to read these to Arla.  Keep sending them.  We are reading all of them, but Arla can only comprehend a few at a time.  Every note and well wish will be saved so she can revisit them as she becomes more able.  They are an encouragement to the family and will be to Arla as well.

Amazing…

When someone suffers a stroke, life often becomes a daily celebration.  So much is exciting and promising and wonderful.  Today Arla had more success with swallowing, and it is a reason to celebrate.  She swallowed a few bites of applesauce and some yogurt.  She was able to chew and swallow some cheese and an animal cracker.  She also mastered a spoonful of thickened water.  While one would think that water would be the easiest thing to swallow, it lacks texture and is difficult to feel in the mouth which can lead to it going into the lungs.  Therefore, the water is thickened to assist a stroke survivor in feeling the substance in her mouth.

Arla is such a powerful force these days.  God is so amazing.  Only our Lord could weaken a woman physically only to raise her up more powerful in her ministry and in the lives of family and friends than ever before.  And she does all this without speaking a word.  Continue to pray for her healing, for Harold’s strength, and for those who work with her.  If any out there doubt the power of God, just look to Arla as an example of God’s mighty works.  She believes.  She has the power of the Lord.   Thanks be to God.

It is a blessing

Arla continues to progress.  Her facial expressions are becoming more like the Arla we know and love.  She is comprehending conversations and knows the names of people and those who visit her.  Tonight when Mary Ann said the name of one of Arla’s dear friends and told her that this friend had the name “Arla” posted all over the house as a reminder to pray, Arla became emotional and began to cry.  This was a clear sign to Mary Ann that Arla knew exactly what friend we were talking about and was filled with the joy of that friendship.  (And, friend, you know who you are.).  This is one of several times when we have really known that Arla is “in there”.

A stroke is an odd thing.  While it has robbed all of us as it hurt Arla’s body, it is also blesses us daily.  The petty things in life are in the background while the relationships and important parts of life have come to the foreground.  Arla and Harold’s children are seeing their parents in a new way.  Though there is sadness, there is tremendous love being shown by Arla and Harold toward one another.  It is a blessing to see our parents love one another so much.  A stroke also causes you to slow down and take life as it comes. A slow pace can be a blessing in our hurry-up world.  Family members have had time to sit and talk as we visited Arla or waited for a therapy or procedure to be done.  And we know there are people who will come to develop a relationship–or strengthen their relationship– with Jesus Christ because they are reading this blog and are seeing the power of our Lord at work in Arla.

We would have preferred the stroke never happened, but God wants us to be blessed…so we must find the blessing.  As you walk your daily life, we pray you may find the blessing in what you are facing.

Good start to the week….

Arla had a good day of therapy, but we are not sure who was more worn out…..Arla or Harold.  God is with us everyday.  He is providing for our needs and gives us the strength to more forward.

Arla would want you to remember that each of us has been given talents by God and we are to use these talents to the glorification of God.  Please use your talents whether they are singing or serving or encouraging or blogging or praying or teaching or visiting or whatever it is that you do well.  Do not discount your talents.  They are important to the work of the Lord.  Arla has become an encourager in a new way.  We pray that God will continue to work through her and become a light to others.  We pray that God will sustain all those who are caring for ill or disabled patients and family members.  We pray that those who care for Arla may be blessed and uplifted, and that they may prosper.

The road is long and the race is not over…. but with God on our side, we will be sustained.

Day of rest….

It was a day for Harold and Arla to hang out together.  After 51 years of marriage, nothing is more enjoyable and good for the spirit than spending the day with your spouse.  With very little therapy going on during the day on Sunday, Arla and Harold just had quality time to sit together and greet a few visitors.

In addition to some restful time, Arla did swallow two small bites of applesauce.  After two weeks of nothing in her mouth, it was a successful event.

Tomorrow, we will find out what Arla is really made of.  Therapy will begin at 8:30 and go till 3.  Pray for strength and endurance.

Notes about visitors

Arla’s rehab will be intense.  Today she was working non-stop, albeit at a slow pace, from 11 to 3.  Normally, she will start earlier than that.  We tell you this to encourage you to be aware of her rehab schedule and expect to find her in a rehabilitation activity.  Rehab will become the number one important activity of the day while the hospital continues to assess if Arla can handle the intensity of this facility.

If you choose to visit, evenings may be most appropriate or ride along with Harold and get some rehab.

Slow and steady will win the race…..

Arla had two sessions of Occupational Therapy and two sessions of Physical Therapy today.  She is willing to work.  And even at this early stage, the work is hard.  So the working and real waiting begins.  She continues to show progress everyday…today we watched her imitate a therapist to brush her teeth and comb her hair.  During physical therapy she could move muscles in her right leg.   She is laughing and following simple commands.

And while progress is encouraging, we are learning that there is much to assess and many realities to face.  The road will be long.   There are many unknowns.  However….there are many certainties.  Arla is still with us.  Arla is doing better than was initially expected.  God has a purpose for Arla….as he has a purpose for us all.  Each day is a blessing.  We pray that you will live today as a gift from God… because that is exactly what it is….a gift.

She graduated…

It is official.  Arla is now at the Rehab Hospital, located on the same campus as Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.  After careful consideration by her doctors and therapists and a lot of hard work and progress from Arla, the team decided she would qualify for the Rehab Hospital.  Her family is very comfortable with this placement.  We believe it is medically and therapeutically appropriate for Arla.  As of 6:30 p.m. tonight, she is officially in rehab.

She is still an hour away from us, but we are comfortable with the care and therapy she will be receiving.  While Harold is still tired and worried about EVERYTHING, he is elated that Arla is becoming stronger.

The race is not over.  The marathon has just begun.  Pray for endurance.  Pray for rest.  Pray for peace.  Pray that her family may look to the Lord and not lean on their own understanding.  And when you pray….say a big “Thanks”…not only for Arla but for all the blessings you have received from God this week.   Tell those you love that you love them….hug your kids…. smile at your neighbor…. thank God for that aching back while you get out of bed without help.   God is good….. all the time!

Standing on the promises of God

There is a hymn we have heard and sung hundreds of times.  The words are posted below.  Just now, these words began moving in Mary Ann’s head, but the familiar words now have new meaning.  Today, Arla stood for a while with assistance.  Today, the neurologist told Harold that of the patients who suffer a stroke in the area of brain that Arla did more than half die within three days.  Thanks be to God.  We are today standing on the promises of God, and we will not fall.

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal  ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and  sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Chorus–Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my  Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of  God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling  storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall  prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present  cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes  free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him  eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s  sword,                                                              Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I shall not fall,
List’ning every  moment to the Spirit’s call.
Resting in my Savior as my All in  all,
Standing on the promises of God.
